RESIDENT STUDENT PARKING PERMITS

Student parking permits will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis starting August 1, 2024 at 10 a.m. The charge for a paid permit will appear on the student bill as "Surface Pay Lot Fee". The charge should appear within 2-3 business days of your registration. You can access your student bill to make a payment by logging into SOLAR. Please note that student financial aid does not cover parking fees.

Resident Parking Permits are only available to Junior and Senior Undergraduate Students as well as all Graduate Students (defined by the University as earning 57 credits before the beginning of the semester). Sudents may determine which parking zone you are eligible to apply for, based on the table below.

  • New residential students that qualify for a Residential Parking Permit, can apply via the Stony Brook Parking Permit System once your residential status is updated. >
  • Students moving from one residential community to another community should visit the Parking Services office, once your residential status has changed in order to exchange your current hang tag for a new one.
  • DISCOUNTED PERMITS (NO LONGER AVAILABLE FOR FALL 2024): 10% of the permits were available to students who are PELL grant or TAP eligible on a first-come, first-served basis at no cost. Eligibility was confirmed with the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships prior to permit activation.

Use of Parking Permits - What to Know

THE FINE PRINT: Users of a University-issued Parking Permit acknowledge responsibility to operate and park a vehicle on Campus in accordance with Stony Brook University's Parking Rules and Regulations. At all times, the University retains ownership of any issued Parking Permit, and ownership is NOT transferable. Parking Permits not in use must be returned to the University.

RENEWING YOUR PERMIT: Parking Permits are not renewed automatically. You must renew online using the Stony Brook Parking Permit System.

HOW TO DISPLAY YOUR PERMIT: When parking on campus, users must display the Permit by hanging it from the rearview mirror support, facing outwards. The Parking Permit is not to be defaced or altered in any manner.

MULTIPLE VEHICLES: All vehicles that display a hang tag must be added within the Parking Permit System. Only one registered vehicle can be parked on campus at a time. Owners may transfer their hang tag to a different registered vehicle as long as the vehicle parked on campus is being used by the Permit owner.  You MAY NOT loan your hang tag to another driver, it is only valid for the owner to whom it is registered. Violators may be subject to ticketing/towing. Please display the Permit from the rearview mirror as noted above.

IF YOU LOSE YOUR PERMIT: Report lost or stolen Permits immediately. There is a small replacement fee for lost, stolen, or discarded Permits. Resale or unauthorized use of your issued Parking Permit is prohibited. Possession or use of a lost or stolen Permit may result in criminal prosecution.
