Beyond the Brook is the "What to Do, Where to Go Outside of SBU" website! Stony Brook is located at the geographic midpoint of Long Island. The campus lies about 60 miles east of New York City and 60 miles west of Montauk Point. It is only a short distance to the beaches of Fire Island and the historic monuments and museums of New York City.

The Office of Sustainability works as a proponent for positive change by partnering with the university community to help develop a sustainable culture, serving as a resource for best practices of sustainable solutions that look to increase operating efficiencies, promote environmental awareness and conserve resources.

The Simons Center for Geometry and Physics is a research center devoted to furthering fundamental knowledge in mathematics and theoretical physics, especially knowledge at the interface of these two disciplines.

The Staller Center for the Arts  is a unique hub of activity offering world-class live performances and outstanding entertainment conveniently located in the center of campus. Stony Brook University is home to three art galleries, the Paul W. Zuccaire Gallery, presenting contemporary art, the Charles B. Wang Center focused on Asian and Asian-American culture, and the Simons Center for Geometry and Physics, offering innovative exhibitions of art, math, & science. The Melville Library exhibits items from Special Collections as well as student art. Experience all of our art venues by joining a campus-wide Art Crawl, offering lively curator-led tours each semester.

Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) is a multipurpose research laboratory housing large, state-of-the-art facilities such as RHIC, NSLS-II, and the Center for Functional Nanomaterials. Stony Brook is a partner in Brookhaven Science Associates LLC, managing the Laboratory for the Department of Energy. Located less than 20 miles from campus, Brookhaven provides many opportunities for collaborative research efforts.

Stony Brook University: Stony Brook University, home to many highly ranked graduate research programs, is located 60 miles from New York City on Long Island's scenic North  Shore. Our 1,100-acre campus is home to 24,000 undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students and more than 13,500 faculty and staff. SBU is a comprehensive research-intensive university and a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities (AAU), which includes 34 public universities among its 62 members. SBU consists of 12 schools and colleges and a teaching hospital that provides state-of-the-art healthcare in the Long Island region. SBU also manages and performs joint research with Brookhaven National Laboratory, the only Department of Energy Laboratory in the Northeast, and shares doctoral programs with Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, a world-renowned molecular biology institute. Stony Brook Medicine integrates and elevates all of our health-related initiatives: education, research and patient care. Stony Brook Medicine is Long Island’s premier academic medical center. With 603 beds, we serve as the region’s only tertiary care center and Level 1 Trauma Center, and are home to the Stony Brook Heart Institute, Stony Brook Cancer Center, Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, Stony Brook Neurosciences Institute, and Stony Brook Digestive Disorders Institute. We also encompass Suffolk County’s only Level 4 Regional Perinatal Center, state-designated AIDS Center, state-designated Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program, state-designated Burn Center, the Christopher Pendergast ALS Center of Excellence, and Kidney Transplant Center. It is home of the nation’s first Pediatric Multiple Sclerosis Center.

The Long Island State Veterans Home:  Located on the campus of Stony Brook University, the Long Island State Veterans Home is a 350-bed skilled nursing facility with a 40-slot Adult Day Health Care Program dedicated to the care of honorably discharged Veterans of the United States Armed Forces, their spouses and Gold Star parents.
