Engineering Teaching Laboratories
The Program
A hands-on learning experience in multiple engineering activities is available for your students through the Engineering Teaching Center. Your students will apply their knowledge of physical sciences and physics to problem solving in various engineering disciplines.
Our faculty will guide your students through the construction of a take-home project as well as a discussion on the many engineering career paths. Our classes are taught by teams of instructors, including university faculty and graduate students in the university’s College of Engineering and Applied Sciences. All lessons are aligned with the New York State Department of Education and the Next Generation Science Standards, as found below.
From a laboratory experience, students will be able to: apply physics knowledge to engineering design practices, collaborate in building a device to meet a technological need, develop and use a model that illustrates the relationships between components of a system, design, build, and refine an engineered product that works within given constraints to convert one form of energy (chemical) to another (electrical). In addition to these learning objectives, students will also be able to see Stony Brook’s campus and talk to (graduate or undergraduate) students on campus about engineering careers and the college experience.
These various experiences can be adapted for all students levels, including middle school students, Regents Physics, Honors Physics, IB Physics, AP Physics I, AP Physics II, AP-C Physics.
