VIS at Emergency Preparedness Day
![]() The event brought in the New York State Citizen Preparedness Corps in conjunction
with the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services (DHSES) to hold a training
course for the Stony Brook community to teach weather-related disaster preparedness.
The International Student Success Task Force recognized that international students
are at a particular disadvantage in preparing for natural disasters. The program covered
a broad range of emergency preparedness topics such as developing a family emergency
plan, stocking up on emergency supplies, and registering for NY-Alert, the free statewide
emergency alert system.
Along with a free pizza lunch, the 130 participants received free giveaways including
first aid kits, flashlights, and a wallet card with emergency information. NYS Disaster
Preparedness Kits containing key items to assist in the immediate aftermath of a disaster
were also raffled off. All participants received a training certificate upon completion.
