Global Forum Returns Spring Semester with Three New Programs
In October, the Office of Global Affairs kicked off its Global Forum series with a packed audience of around 300 students, faculty and staff in the Wang Center Theater with simultaneous broadcasting in the neighboring lecture hall. Participants heard election predictions, issues and outcomes from Stony Brook faculty, including Dr. Helmut Norpoth, who correctly identified the winner of the election back in February 2016. This semester, the Global Forum continues with three exciting events on contemporary global issues impacting our campus! On March 1, Global Affairs is teaming up with the Center for Multicultural and Intercultural Communication for Intercultural Communication: Understanding Our Global Campus. Five professors from diverse disciplines will discuss the importance and implications of intercultural communication on campus and how we can enhance and celebrate our diversity. Returning students, faculty-led program directors, and representatives from the President’s Council of Student Advisors will impart their experiences studying overseas during the March 29 event, Transform Your Life Through Study Abroad! In addition to sharing the many benefits of studying abroad, the representatives will also present the challenges and issues faced by students looking to study abroad representatives will present possible solutions. The Global Forum will host a Thematic Forum in conjunction with the Association of International Education Administrators (AIEA) and the Confucius Institute on April 12, Far Beyond: Understanding Chinese International Students and Helping Them Succeed. Along with Stony Brook faculty, the day-long forum will feature speakers from the Chronicle of Higher Education, AIEA, and Rutgers University. Chinese international students make up over 50 percent of Stony Brook’s international student population. Speakers will look at the issues and concerns that have been raised about these students’ academic integrity, language skills, and acculturation, while emphasizing intervention techniques and best practices.
