AHLSS Visiting Artists Series 2015-16 Award Recipients
1) Emerging Artist Residency: Program in Writing and Rhetoric — Residency of Catherine Lacey
Lead Faculty: Kevin Clouther, Program in Writing and Rhetoric
Author Catherine Lacey will be in residence at Stony Brook University for four days during the 2015-16 academic year (ca. mid-October to early November), leading a series of workshops for undergraduate and graduate students who are taking courses in fiction and creative non-fiction writing. Lacey will also deliver a lecture on the craft of creative writing for the general Stony Brook community.
Lacey’s first book, Nobody Is Ever Missing, was published in 2014 by Farrar, Straus & Giroux, to very favorable reviews. Recently, she was one of five nominees for the New York Public Library’s Young Lions Fiction award. Lacey has a second novel and short story collection forthcoming from Farrar, Straus & Giroux.
2) Established Artist Residency: Paul Taylor 2 Dance Company, Dance Program
Lead Faculty: Amy Yopp Sullivan, Director, Center for Dance, Movement, and Somatic Learning
The Paul Taylor 2 Dance Company will be in residence for three weeks from April 18-May 7, 2016 in a residency and exchange of practices with the Center for Dance, Movement and Somatic Learning at Stony Brook University. The Paul Taylor 2 Dance Company, a troupe of 6 dancers, will be leading masterclasses for university and community students, holding open rehearsals, collaborating in open creative labs to examine interdisciplinary creative processes, and offering technical and performance training to university students. Throughout the residency and exchange, the Paul Taylor 2 Dance Company will also train with Director Amy Yopp Sullivan, working in the healing and somatic art therapies, which she incorporates in her practice. The residency and exchange of practices will culminate in informal performances of participants with the Taylor 2 Company. Following the residency and exchange, the Paul Taylor Dance Company will perform on May 7, 2016 as part of the Staller Center’s programming for the Long Island community.
Paul Taylor is one of the pioneers for modern dance. Mr. Taylor founded the Paul Taylor Dance Company in 1954 after dancing with many icons of modern dance including Martha Graham and Merce Cunningham, and at 84 he continues to build upon a repertoire that now numbers 142 dances. His influence has shaped generations of dancers and choreographers, and his dances have captivated audiences around the world.
