The Barry Goldwater Scholarship

Goldwater Awardees

The Barry Goldwater Scholarship is one of the premier awards for undergraduate STEM researchers in the United States. Prospective applicants must be nominated by Stony Brook's faculty committee in order to compete at the national level. 

Interested in learning more?

First, review the eligibility criteria to be sure you can apply for the award.

Second, complete a pre-application (will be available on Tuesday, September 3, 2024) by 12pm/noon EST on Friday, November 1, 2024.

If your pre-application is approved, SBU's Director for External Fellowships will grant you access to the full application and provide information about next steps.

Eligibility:

  • Submit a pre-application by Wednesday, November 1, 2024; if approved, your full application will be due Monday, December 9, 2024 at 12pm/noon Campus Nomination Deadline.

  • Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

  • Be a full-time matriculated undergraduate Sophomore or Junior (Junior status preferred). For more information on how Goldwater defines these terms click here.

  • Intend to pursue a PhD in the natural sciences, math, or engineering. Students pursuing only an MD will not be selected; in certain cases, exceptional prospective MD-PhD students will be considered.

  • Have a 3.7 GPA or higher to be competitive.

  • Have a strong record of undergraduate research in STEM.
