Thursday, September 2, 2021 11:30AM: Impact of Hurricane Ida On Our Community

Dear Colleagues,

I understand that you and your families may well have been impacted by the storm in your residential communities. I hope you are safe.

As we address the issues that have affected our campus, brought about by the remnants of hurricane Ida, it’s important that we consider students who have been directly affected.  I ask that you provide flexibility where class attendance is concerned today and tomorrow.

Impact was felt most significantly in the Mendelsohn Community area of the Stony Brook campus. This primarily houses first-year students, who were temporarily relocated overnight. Student Affairs is in direct contact with these students, providing access to their rooms for medicine and other urgent needs. While the status of the buildings is assessed today, we are planning contingencies to move them to other campus residence halls as needed, and we are encouraging those who come from the local area to head home today and remain there for the Labor Day weekend.

Only one other building, the Student Union, was so severely affected by the storm. The Union is closed today. Those who work in the building are working remotely while an assessment is made, and no events will be held or services offered there today.

Classes will be held as scheduled. Custodial staff and building managers are assessing conditions and identifying any additional needs. Roads and parking areas have been cleared and dining and SB transit services are operating on normal schedules.

We encourage you to please use caution and your best judgement with regard to travel and local conditions. We will continue to update the community with new information as it becomes available.

Thank you for your flexibility as we navigate the challenges brought about by the storm; and thank you to VP Larry Zacarese and VP Rick Gatteau and their teams for the guidance they bring to Stony Brook.

Sincerely,

Paul M. Goldbart
Provost & Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs

Thursday, September 2, 2021 8:00AM: Remnants of Hurricane Ida

To the Campus Community,

The remnants of hurricane Ida created flooding conditions with many areas of campus affected overnight. Impact was felt most significantly in the Mendelsohn Community area of the Stony Brook campus. Students in the affected residence halls were safely relocated and our facilities teams are working to mitigate the flooded conditions and assess the viability of a safe return to the building. We are communicating directly with the students who have been affected to address their immediate needs, and they will be granted flexibility in terms of class attendance today. The Student Union was also affected by flooding. The building is closed while damage assessment and clean up continue. Staff who work in the building should work remotely today.

No other buildings or residential communities have been severely impacted. Custodial staff and building managers are assessing conditions and identifying any additional needs.

Roads and parking areas have been cleared and dining and SB transit services are operating on normal schedules.

The campus is open and classes will be held as scheduled today. Please use caution and your best judgement with regard to travel.

Students requiring special assistance can contact the Student Support Team in the Division of Student Affairs at student_supportteam@stonybrook.edu. If you are experiencing an emergency situation, please contact University Police at 631-632-3333.

We will continue to update the community with new information as it becomes available.

You may review the EPO information at http://www.stonybrook.edu/epo

Also, all members of the campus community are encouraged to register for the SB Guardian personal safety system.  SB Guardian is a free app that is available for all students, faculty, and staff and turns your smart phone into a personalized “blue light phone” in your pocket. For more information visit  http://www.stonybrook.edu/emergency/alerts/guardian.html or go to the app store for your iPhone or Android device and search for "Rave Guardian."

Lastly, in light of several recent tragic events occurring on college and university campuses around the nation, we encourage all members of the campus community to go tohttp://www.stonybrook.edu/emergency/procedures/shooter.html and familiarize themselves with the video titled "Run, Hide, Fight", developed as part of a federal grant from the Department of Homeland Security and used widely in higher education emergency preparedness.   The University Police Department also offers training for students, faculty and staff to learn more about what you can do to be prepared and stay safe on campus.  Please contact the Community Relations Team at 632-3056 for more information.

**NOTE** Today's test is an exercise only and does not require evacuation or other action on the part of building occupants.

Friday, August 10, 2012 --- 2:13 PM

A FLASH FLOOD WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 400 PM EDT FOR SUFFOLK COUNTY...

THE PUBLIC REPORTED A THUNDERSTORM PRODUCING FLASH FLOODING OVER THE WARNED AREA WITH REPORTS OF FLOODING OF ROADWAYS IN BABYLON... ISLIP... GREAT RIVER... AND BOHEMIA. FLASH FLOODING REMAINS POSSIBLE WITH ANY THUNDERSTORMS PASSING THROUGH SUFFOLK COUNTY THROUGH 4 PM.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

EXCESSIVE RUNOFF FROM HEAVY RAINFALL WILL CAUSE FLOODING OF URBAN AREAS... HIGHWAYS... STREETS AND UNDERPASSES AS WELL AS OTHER DRAINAGE AREAS AND LOW LYING SPOTS.

NEVER DRIVE YOUR VEHICLE INTO AREAS WHERE THE WATER COVERS THE ROADWAY. FLOOD WATERS ARE USUALLY DEEPER THAN THEY APPEAR. JUST ONE FOOT OF FLOWING WATER IS POWERFUL ENOUGH TO SWEEP VEHICLES OFF THE ROAD. WHEN ENCOUNTERING FLOODED ROADS MAKE THE SMART CHOICE... TURN AROUND... DONT DROWN.

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CROSS WATER COVERED BRIDGES...  DIPS... OR LOW WATER CROSSINGS. NEVER TRY TO CROSS A FLOWING STREAM...  EVEN A SMALL ONE... ON FOOT. TO ESCAPE RISING WATER MOVE UP TO HIGHER GROUND

Friday, August 10, 2012 --- 1:17 PM

STRONG THUNDERSTORMS WILL IMPACT NASSAU AND SUFFOLK COUNTIES.

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DOPPLER RADAR WAS TRACKING A STRONG THUNDERSTORM 12 MILES SOUTH OF GILGO STATE PARK... OR 13 MILES SOUTHWEST OF ROBERT MOSES STATE PARK... AND MOVING NORTH AT 40 MPH.

FREQUENT CLOUD TO GROUND LIGHTNING... AND WINDS UP TO 40 MPH ARE EXPECTED WITH THIS STORM. IN ADDITION... VERY HEAVY RAIN... WITH RAINFALL RATES BETWEEN 1 AND 2 INCHES AN HOUR... IS OCCURRING WITH THIS STORM. THIS COULD CAUSE PONDING OF WATER ON ROADWAYS... AND MINOR FLOODING OF POOR DRAINAGE AREAS.

LIGHTNING IS ONE OF NATURES NUMBER ONE KILLERS. REMEMBER... IF YOU CAN HEAR THUNDER... YOU ARE CLOSE ENOUGH TO BE STRUCK BY LIGHTNING. MOVE TO SAFE SHELTER IMMEDIATELY.

Thursday - April 4th, 2012 - 1:30 p.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Alert for Nassau and Suffolk Counties this weekend. A Red Flag Warning is a warning issued to area firefighting agencies that conditions are ideal for fire ignition and propagation. Several factors enable wildfires to start easily and spread quickly at this time, including the lack of green vegetation, abundance of available fuels such as dry grass and leaves, warm temperatures and wind.

"NORTHWEST WINDS GUSTING UP TO 20 MPH...RELATIVE HUMIDITIES DROPPING TO NEAR 20 PERCENT...AND DRY FINE FUELS SUCH AS GRASSES AND BRUSH WILL RESULT IN AN ELEVATED RISK FOR THE SPREAD OF WILDFIRES FROM LATE THIS MORNING THROUGH SUNSET. SIMILAR CONDITIONS ARE ALSO LIKELY AGAIN ON FRIDAY AND SATURDAY." Open fires and the burning of brush is banned. You are also encouraged to not throw cigarettes on the ground or from your car. A carelessly tossed cigarette on the edge of a college campus, where students were registering for classes, is said to be the cause of the wildfire that burned homes, businesses and 5,500 acres of pine barrens in Westhampton during the summer of 1995. For more information on the Westhampton Wildfire visit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_Island_Central_Pine_Barrens For more information on the Red Flag Alert visit the National Weather Service at: http://www.nws.noaa.gov/view/largemap.ph

During this period, regularly scheduled television, radio, cable and satellite shows will be interrupted as the system is being tested. This event will be just a test and not a real emergency alert.

The national Emergency Alert System is an alert and warning system that can be activated by the President to provide information to the American public during emergencies. NOAA's National Weather Service, governors, and state and local emergency authorities also use parts of the system to issue more localized emergency alerts. The test is an important exercise in ensuring that the system is effective in communicating critical information to the public in the event of a real national emergency. A national test will help federal partners and EAS participants determine the reliability of the system, as well as its effectiveness in notifying the public of emergencies and potential dangers both nationally and regionally. The test will also provide the FCC and FEMA a chance to identify improvements that need to be made to build a modernized and fully accessible Emergency Alert System.

For additional information about this test please visit:

FEMA: http://fema.gov/news/newsrelease.fema?id=55722

FCC: http://fcc.gov/encyclopedia/emergency-alert-system-nationwide-test

H1N1 Influenza (Flu) Update: Thursday, March 11, 2010 4:00 pm

Attention Stony Brook Campus Community: Don’t let influenza spoil your plans for Spring Break.

Beginning early in the fall 2009 semester, Stony Brook University hosted several Points of Distribution (PODS) to administer both the seasonal and H1N1 flu vaccines for our campus community. Several thousand students, faculty, and staff availed themselves during this remarkable effort, greatly limiting the cases of Influenza Like Illness (ILI) on our campus. The 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccine is still readily available both on and off campus at Student Health Services, community health clinics, doctors' offices, state and local health departments and many pharmacies.

Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself against 2009 H1N1 flu. And this protection is especially important if you have a health condition, such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease, pregnancy and other conditions that increase your risk of serious flu-related complications or hospitalization.

In addition to getting vaccinated, you can also take the following steps to help protect you from getting or spreading the flu and other illnesses while you’re on break:

  • Talk to your health care provider not only about 2009 H1N1, but also other recommended, routine vaccinations you may need if traveling, especially overseas.
  • Visit the CDC’s Travelers’ Health website (website (www.cdc.gov/travel) for more information and healthy travel recommendations to prevent influenza and other illnesses during travel. You can also find special information about spring break travel.
  • Stay away from people who appear sick or are coughing or sneezing. The main way the flu spreads is through the droplets of coughs and sneezes.
  • Practice good hygiene by washing your hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing and sneezing. If soap and water are not available, alcohol-based hand rubs are useful.
  • Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue.
  • Wash your hands often.
  • Don’t share drinking glasses or utensils – avoid drinking beverages mixed in a common container or eating after others.
  • Stay home (or away from others) if you are sick, for 24 hours after your fever is gone, to prevent others from getting sick too.

Spring Break is a time for rest, relaxation and fun with friends and family. Take the opportunity to get vaccinated before leaving for Spring Break and protect yourself, friends and family against 2009 H1N1 flu. Don’t let influenza spoil your plans — get vaccinated against 2009 H1N1.

The University Police Office of Emergency Management is closely monitoring the winter weather system approaching our area.  The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for our area until 6:00 pm Saturday.  TheWinter Storm Watch previously issued is no longer in effect.  Current expected accumulations of 2 to 4 inches are likely for our area, with larger amounts possible depending on the storm track.  Strong northeast winds in excess of 25 miles per hour will cause snow to drift and impact visibility.

All campuses are currently operating under normal schedules with the following exception:

  • The LEED Green Associate Examination Preparation class scheduled for today at 9:00 am in Building 17 (Research & Development Park) has been canceled.

For your own safety, and to help local first responders in our area, please stay off roads this evening unless travel is absolutely essential.  Please continue to monitor this page as updates will be posted as necessary.
