Why did you choose your internship and how did you secure it?

My journey to securing a software engineering internship was far from straightforward. I wasn’t always set on a clear path, and the process involved a lot of trial and error. During my sophomore year at Stony Brook University, I applied to multiple positions months before Winter Break 2024. Initially, I faced numerous rejections, which was disheartening. However, my perseverance paid off when a company reached out to me for an interview, and I finally secured a role as a Software Engineer working on I/O boards for the Summer of 2024.

What was your initial experience with the application process and how did it evolve?

The application process was daunting at first. I spent hours refining my resume, using tools like Resume Worded to ensure it was up to par. Despite my best efforts, the initial wave of applications didn’t yield any offers. I felt frustrated and uncertain. Yet, I kept pushing forward, applying to as many positions as I could find. The breakthrough came when the company contacted me for an interview. It was a moment of validation after countless applications and rejections.

How did you prepare for the interview and what strategies did you use?

Preparing for the interview was intense. I focused on honing my interviewing skills, as I knew this was crucial. During the interview, I discussed various projects, both academic and personal, that showcased my skills and passion. I highlighted my project from ESE 280, the Maze Search from ESE 124, and the Alarm Clock built in ESE 123. Additionally, I talked about my personal projects involving Arduino data collection and data interpolation. These experiences allowed me to demonstrate my technical abilities and enthusiasm for the field.

What made you stand out in the interview and how did it impact your perspective?

The interview was a turning point. I realized the importance of not just showcasing technical skills, but also presenting myself as a well-rounded candidate. I approached the interview with a sense of enthusiasm and authenticity, which I believe helped me stand out. The interviewers were particularly interested in my hands-on experience and my ability to explain complex concepts clearly. This experience boosted my confidence and reinforced my passion for software engineering.

What advice would you give to students seeking internships?

My journey underscores the importance of persistence and resilience. It’s crucial to have a well-crafted resume and to apply broadly, as securing an interview often requires multiple attempts. Showcasing personal projects can set you apart and demonstrate genuine interest in the field. Most importantly, approach interviews with confidence and be yourself. Remember, it’s a mix of luck and effort. Keep pushing forward, and eventually, you’ll find the opportunity that’s right for you.
