My teaching specialties range from pre-modern French literature & culture to fairy-tale
studies from their classic versions to their modern & post-modern adaptations, including
films and illustrations. My background is in women’s 17th-century French literature, in particular précieux fairy tales of the 1690s. In 2002 I published a monograph La Seconde préciosité. Floraison des conteuses de 1690 à 1756 with Gunter Narr Verlag and I have since published several articles on the poetics
of 17th-century conteuses and on the various connections between the conteuses, preciosity, and libertinism. I have served as editor of several volumes on the fairy
tale from a special issue of the Romanic Review: Approaches to the Literary Fairy Tales (in 2010) to The Teller’s Tale: Lives of the Classic Fairy-Tale Writers, a volume on collected biographies, with SUNY Press (2012), which won the 2012 honor
title award from the Children Literature Association. I also co-edited Fairy Tales Framed a collected volume on prefaces and other paratexts to classic fairy tales also with
SUNY Press in 2012. In the more recent years I have extended my critical work on the poetics of contes de fées to modern and contemporary productions including films, opera, ballet, musical, illustrations
and found a particular interest in Disney’s versions of classic fairy tales. Repositioning
the fairy tale and redefining the genre in view of the constant re-adaptations of
fairy-tale stories in popular culture is the direction I have chosen to take in my
current work.
