The Role of Galician Regionalism: Literary Representations of the Spanish Civil War
and its Post-War Reverberations
(Galicia, Spain)
In the warm embrace of July 2023, I was lucky enough, thanks to the Guiliano Fellowship, to embark on a trip to La Coruña, Spain, eager to delve deep into the cultural tapestry of this enchanting region. The centerpiece of my journey was the annual Galician Book Fair, a literary haven that unfolds its pages only once a year in La Coruña. Amidst the bustling stalls and vibrant conversations, I had the privilege of engaging with various critics who shared their insights on the topics central to my research.
One of the highlights of my visit was a captivating exploration of the Filmoteca in La Coruña. As the reels rolled, I immersed myself in a cinematic journey through the tumultuous era of the Spanish Civil War. The poignant narratives depicted on the screen added a visual dimension to my research, enriching my understanding of the historical context.
A pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela led me to an enlightening exposition on Federico Garcia Lorca and his profound impact on Galician literature. Here, I acquired a precious first edition book, the first comprehensive book that held the essence of Lorca's work in Galicia. This acquisition proved to be a significant addition to my research, unveiling facets previously obscured.
The libraries of La Coruña became my sanctuaries, with the Biblioteca de La Coruña and the Biblioteca de Sada opening their doors to rare first edition texts on the Spanish Civil War and literature. These invaluable resources, though not available for loan, allowed me to peruse pages and do great research. In the pursuit of knowledge, I reached out to a rare-book seller in Noia, Galicia. To my delight, this expert in literary rarities unearthed texts that had eluded the libraries, offering me a unique perspective at a discounted price. These hidden gems enriched my research, providing insights that breathed life into the words of the past.
La Coruña, with its book fairs, film archives, and literary treasures, became a sanctuary for my intellectual exploration for my dissertation. My fellowship journey not only broadened my understanding of my research topics but also fostered connections with fellow enthusiasts, critics, and rare-book sellers, creating a mosaic of experiences that will forever linger in the pages of my academic pursuits.
Thank you, again, to the Guiliano Fellowship for this once in a lifetime opportunity.
