How did you hear about Stony Brook University?
I was born and raised in New Zealand -- my parents immigrated from China in the late
90s. My violin teacher back home, Andrew Beer, began his college music studies at
Stony Brook -- as I was going through my college applications with him, he introduced
me to the school, told me of his incredible experiences, and urged me to apply.
On Stony Brook:
SBU is home to a range of the world's most sought-after music faculty and provides
the classic American college experience that I likely would not experience at a music
conservatory. Being able to connect with a large, diverse community and indulge in
various interests outside of music was especially important to my development and
growth as a person in general.
On her major:
I am a Music major, concentrating on violin performance. I decided in my third year
of high school that I wanted to pursue music professionally -- not a single minute
goes by where I am not either playing, listening, or thinking about something related
to music. I was an active performer during my younger years, which brought me exclusive
opportunities to travel internationally for classes and programs. These experiences
gave me an idea of what the professional musician's life would look like, which helped
solidify my "dream" path.
Favorite class:
Studying privately with Dr. Joanna Kaczorowska (MUS365) has been one of my most treasured
experiences to date. Dr. Kaczorowska is a huge, unforgettable inspiration — I will
never forget her unwavering faith in me, her thrilling incandescent personality, and
all she has done to refine my technique and propel my musical identity. My violin
playing has been instilled with conviction and spirit beyond what I imagined was possible.
I have taken away priceless life and practical lessons from our time together, which
I know will significantly contribute towards my success and enjoyment as a performing
musician on the global stage!
Awards & Accolades:

- Third Place in the Undergraduate Concerto Competition (2020)
- Concertmistress of the Stony Brook University Orchestra
- Summa Cum Laude (4.0) with Honors

Plans for post-graduation:
Pursuing further education in violin and giving back the gift of my music to the community
performing on local and international stages.
Advice for potential Seawolves:
Make the most of all the opportunities available on campus, whether it is exploring
all of your interests by joining clubs and organizations, or meeting a diverse network
of people from all backgrounds! Stony Brook is home to a community of vibrant, driven
students, all of who have so much love to give and so many stories to tell!
Favorite SBU memory:
There’s too many to choose from, but I’ve loved every minute spent with the incredible
friends I’ve made in my department inside and outside the classroom! I also treasure
my time socializing and making a meaningful community impact with the upstanding women
in my sorority.
