First Generation Future Ready Student Program
About the Program
The First Generation Future Ready Student Program is a credit-bearing experiential learning opportunity to empower first generation* undergraduate students to achieve career readiness. We recognize the unique strengths and challenges faced by our first-generation students due to family members who have not been through the college experience themselves. This program aims to provide targeted support, resources, and community to ensure your success and employability.

- Workplace Navigation & Skills: Learn to confidently explore diverse career paths and successfully navigate workplace culture. Develop career readiness competencies including communication, teamwork, and time management.
- Personalized Support & Community: Benefit from a supportive cohort model connecting you with fellow first-generation students, mentorship opportunities, and personalized coaching from program facilitators.
- Resource Access: Connect with on- and off-campus resources essential for both personal well-being and employability. This includes access to site visits and guest speakers in industry, as well as SBU faculty and staff.
Future Ready Impact:
Participants will be empowered to leverage new knowledge and resources to prepare successful applications and confidently secure their next steps, including internships, jobs, research positions, grad school applications, and volunteer opportunities within the academic year and after program completion.
Eligibility Requirements

- Currently enrolled student matriculated in an undergraduate degree program at SBU
- You must have a minimum GPA of 2.5
- You must identify as a First Generation Student*
- Be willing to participate in an internship, industry project or other experiences in the upcoming fall, spring, or summer semester.
- Commitment to participate in both the fall and spring semesters.
*A formal definition of a First Generation Student is one for whom neither parent or guardian has completed a four-year college degree.
