Areas of Specialization: Twentieth-Century American Art, Postmodernism, Queer Theory, Gender Studies, Media Studies
Eli S. Zadeh is a Ph.D. candidate in Art History and Criticism at the State University of New York, Stony Brook, working on the imbrications of art and sexuality in the late twentieth-century United States. In particular, his work probes the representations and performances of power across mediums and cultural practices in the 1970s and '80s, and explores their social and political underpinnings in queer theories. At SUNY, he teaches courses on the history of art in the United States and history of photography, striving to develop approaches that enable the Americanist field to be more responsive to the global turn. Areas of pedagogical interest include American art and visual culture in the 19th and 20th centuries. More theoretical aspects of his work examine issues around the visual and performative expressions of biopower, control, and agency.
